Me and my arthritis, by Liz Sabin.

In June 2006 at the age of 16, I was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. At the time I was in the middle of my GCSE exams, which I completed and gained 6 Cs and a D. For over a year I had a swollen big toe on my left foot. I saw a lot of medical professionals (eg doctors, physiotherapists), but none of them knew what was wrong. It was only when my right foot became swollen that I found out that I had Arthritis, and then a few weeks later my right knee became swollen and I was told that had Arthritis in it as well. After being diagnosed I felt shocked and scared, but also relieved to finally know what was wrong with me. Now 18, I have also completed a home learning course. I was a Millennium Volunteer and through my involvement engaged with the Edge Learner Forum.

What do you do?

I am a junior 3D artist, specialising in interior, automotive and some character design

What was your journey to get to where you are?

It took a lot of hard work, continuously pushing my skills and comparing it to industry standard scenes. I learnt about different methods of modelling, texturing and rendering, which has all helped open me up to new territory.

What was your education like?

My education was been quite an eye opener, especially at college, it changed the way I look at media, I see it a more professional view than a consumer. Having this mind set now has allowed me to understand more about media products than just enjoy them.

What does success mean to you?

For me, success is something that is born from a lot of hard work and preparation, if something comes out the way you intend it to, you have succeeded

What Challenges have you faced?

Well, that would probably be the brick walls I came across when trying to improve my skill. If it wasn’t me, it was the computer or its software. If it wasn’t the pc’s it was the storage medium holding my work, but with all this I have learnt to work more effectively.

How do you maintain being yourself?

I know that the skills that I have are God given, and because of that I try to make sure that he is glorified in what I do rather than me. I’m just an instrument of his great work.

Did you have any support?

Yes I did, I had support from my family, both in the home and at my local church, my friends were a great help, the little debates we had caused us to model things that we thought were better than the other.

What drives you?

My passion for video games, CGI movies and special effects drive me.  Seeing what professional artists can do with the software and hardware of today is truly inspiring. But there boundaries are not yet being pushed. I am very curious to see what all this technology is truly capable of.

Who is your role model?

I don’t have a role model in particular. I usually just try to make my work as good as others through comparison and research

What advice would you give to young people?

Aspire to make a positive impact on society rather than a negative one. There is hope for this generation.

What do you think education should be like?

I think education should help students realise their potential in the field they are interested in and provide them with the essential tools to make their dreams possible. Tutors should have the same passion it would make an ordinary class into a group, a family all pursuing the same goal.
