Me and my arthritis, by Liz Sabin.

In June 2006 at the age of 16, I was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. At the time I was in the middle of my GCSE exams, which I completed and gained 6 Cs and a D. For over a year I had a swollen big toe on my left foot. I saw a lot of medical professionals (eg doctors, physiotherapists), but none of them knew what was wrong. It was only when my right foot became swollen that I found out that I had Arthritis, and then a few weeks later my right knee became swollen and I was told that had Arthritis in it as well. After being diagnosed I felt shocked and scared, but also relieved to finally know what was wrong with me. Now 18, I have also completed a home learning course. I was a Millennium Volunteer and through my involvement engaged with the Edge Learner Forum.

Tips for success: I never forget where I’ve come from and how I got here

Role Model > Malachis Campbell

 What do you do?

I go college and unemployed at the moment.
What was your journey to get to where you are?

It has been rather long one, and a rough one. Whatever life throws at you accept it and it makes you a stronger person.

What was your education like?

Education is just like Life. You learn from your mistakes, but hopefully you recognize your mistakes before it’s too late. Also you have to make sacrifices for education. That sacrifice is free time!  You have to sacrifice free time for you to get far in Education. My education wasn’t perfect because I wasn’t ready to sacrifice my free time, but I recognized before it was too late and changed that around.

What does success mean to you?

It means A LOT! To be a successful Black Boy/Man in this day and age is a bonus to your life and an inspiration to others!

What challenges have you faced?

I’ve faced Peer Pressure, Being Disowned, Talked about, Mistreated and Lied on, but all of these made me a stronger person and made me Stand on my own Two Feet!

How do you maintain being yourself? (How do you stay true to yourself and keep being who you are?

I never forget where I’ve come from and how I got here. There is times where I want to go on bad, but there is no Need. Where I’ve come from and how I’ve been treated and what I’ve seen with my own two eyes keeps me maintained.

Did you have any support? (Explore family and friends; what did your parents say?)

My mum, My Nan, and my good friends. My mum has taught me most I know.

What drives you? (Include what kept you going through the hard times?)

I just look in the mirror and say “I’ve got to keep on keeping on”

Who is your role model?

My Mother & My Nan
