Me and my arthritis, by Liz Sabin.

In June 2006 at the age of 16, I was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. At the time I was in the middle of my GCSE exams, which I completed and gained 6 Cs and a D. For over a year I had a swollen big toe on my left foot. I saw a lot of medical professionals (eg doctors, physiotherapists), but none of them knew what was wrong. It was only when my right foot became swollen that I found out that I had Arthritis, and then a few weeks later my right knee became swollen and I was told that had Arthritis in it as well. After being diagnosed I felt shocked and scared, but also relieved to finally know what was wrong with me. Now 18, I have also completed a home learning course. I was a Millennium Volunteer and through my involvement engaged with the Edge Learner Forum.

Ever wondered what type of character it takes to succeed within the video creating industry? Jet Jagpall is a photographer and proclaims “Health is wealth.” The wedding film producer states that witnessing people with hardship in less prosperous nations drives him to his goals. Jagpal’s faith in God has driven him to success after facing the hardship of losing his mother at a young age

What do you do?

Director of a Multimedia company, Jagpal Media specialises in Photography and videography within the wedding and music industry.

What was your journey to get to where you are?

I've been working the wedding photography field for a number of years along with producing music since the 1980s. Along the way I have encountered many difficulties but I've never let anything effect my visions, passion and goals.

What was your education like?

The one thing that I'm proud of is my education, I left school with 9 GCSE's and at college I attained 4 A'Levels. I enrolled on a first year diploma in medicine but soon changed to follow my passion for photography and multimedia. I gained a degree in photography in 1995.

What does success mean to you?

People have been striving for it all their life and many achieving success, and others are not so fortunate. Many have been pursuing success for years and others start towards it and seem to find it almost immediately. It is a concept that wars have been fought over & countries have united. Success to one man is to achieve their personal goals and ambitions it has been that way for years. The meaning of success comes in many forms and many definitions. It depends on what you are searching for in life, I've searched for happines and contentment and I have truly found it in my work and personal life.

 What challenges have you faced?

The biggest challenge in my life was losing my mother at a young age and having to support my younger brothers as well as coping with the loss myself. It has been a struggle but I always had faith in God who has shown me the road to success, honesty and prosperity.

How do you maintain being yourself?

I try to keep a clear mind be focused and physically healthy with regular exercise and good food. I am also a proud father of 3 with a loving wife and brothers who help supports my family life. This helps me maintain  a sense of myself.

 Did you have any support?

I have had a lot of support over the years from family and friends but only in the form of advice and a shoulder to lean on. Financialy I have always supported myself, I had my first income when I held my first camera the Minolta 35mm manual camera at the age of 14. This was when I photographed my first wedding and I did my first music gig at 16 soon realising my talent and passion. I've been working at this ever since.

What drives you?

Soon after I graduated I went to tour the world visiting India, Jamaica and Africa helping build deprived areas with the basic needs of food and shelter. Having worked closely with people of different backgrounds with so many hardships in their lives. Witnessing this at a young age made me appreiciate what I've got and gave me the strength and drive to achieve my goals.

 Who is your role model?

The person I've most admired and looked upon as a role model is Mother Theresa, for her loving nature, dedication and the positive changes she made in peoples lives.

What advice would you give to young people?

It's difficult for youngsters to take advice from others I know because I was young once. The the main point I would advise is that they have excellent listening skills, be very patient in anything they do in life whether it be education, work or family life. Most importantly you must look after your health! Health is wealth.

What do you think education should be like?

We are very lucky to have the education system we do in this country and the fact that it's compulsory for every child. You have to remember that in some countries they do not have these opportunities and people are deprived of the gift of learning. But I also think that education should be fun and disciplined and rewarding for those who accomplish it at a high level academically, socially and spiritually.
