Me and my arthritis, by Liz Sabin.

In June 2006 at the age of 16, I was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. At the time I was in the middle of my GCSE exams, which I completed and gained 6 Cs and a D. For over a year I had a swollen big toe on my left foot. I saw a lot of medical professionals (eg doctors, physiotherapists), but none of them knew what was wrong. It was only when my right foot became swollen that I found out that I had Arthritis, and then a few weeks later my right knee became swollen and I was told that had Arthritis in it as well. After being diagnosed I felt shocked and scared, but also relieved to finally know what was wrong with me. Now 18, I have also completed a home learning course. I was a Millennium Volunteer and through my involvement engaged with the Edge Learner Forum.

Poster is ready to roll out….

By Admin

Our two sided poster which aims to share employers’ and young people’s expectations of each other in the work place is ready for distribution.  The poster was researched and designed by members of the Sussex Forum and was unveiled at the recent National Event.  We are now talking to work experience co-ordinators in local schools to distribute the poster and to get some user feedback.

Future for online game!

By Admin

Sussex forum members have been developing a concept for an interactive online game to promote practical and vocational learning and to help young people make more informed choices about their futures.  We are now hoping to collaborate with participation workers and those involved with promoting work experience placements within East Sussex County Council to move this project forward.  We also have expert help at hand from the young people completing an NVQ in Quality Assurance in the gaming industry at NC Soft.  We met Ben, Tim, Robin, Scott and Nicky whilst researching our work experience poster project.  They will be joining us at our next forum meeting in October to support us in this new and exciting project.

Latest News from London

By Simon

NESTA                                                                                                                                           Some members from London will be attending and giving their views at a seminar commissioned by NESTA (The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts), that bring young people, youth practitioners and ‘thought leaders’ together to share experiences and examples of youth-led innovation and work out what makes a youth-led project successful, so the methods can be replicated elsewhere.

Meeting with MP
We had a meeting with Barry Sheerman MP and spoke about many possible projects we'd like to start. One of the most exciting ideas was a Youth Commission, through which him and his team would work with the learner forum to generate ideas and get feedback on some of the work he is doing.

Learner Voice

Another exciting development; we have a slot at a conference on ‘Learner Voice’ on October 23rd at Warwick University, Coventry. We will be talking about the progression of Learner Voice due to the proactiveness and great opinions of young people today.

Edge Instead Progress
Finally, as a result of our work at South Camden Community School (the Edge Instead project) we have been approached by her majesty’s school inspection organisation ‘OFSTED’ and asked to present the findings, focusing on the need for students to be more involved in the inspection process of their own schools. This is a massive breakthrough for the forum, and could potentially have a real impact on young people's engagement with their schools!Laughing

My experiences by Max

By CJ

CJ the leader of our forum has asked me to write this newsletter to talk about, The forum, My experiences and me.

Edge is a group of young people who meet up and work together on projects and share each others experiences. We share our own experiences throughout our education and the way we learnt and the good and bad times we had within the educational environment. With these experiences work on a way we could change things for others so others can have a chance to have a good education. We have also spoken to important people to ask questions about how they got where they did in their life and how they got the job they did. One of these trips was when I went out to the Skills Commission at the Houses of Parliament in London with CJ, Kirsty and Helen.

What did we have to do?

We had to meet up with other forums at the houses of parliament to present to M.P’s what we think should be done to improve work experience and how it can be changed to give people a better insight on work experience. We had to talk about ideas that could be put forward to give people the insight to gain experience within the wide range of other jobs.

I joined Edge about 10month ago and have enjoyed the experiences through the last few months. While I am away from Edge I normally am going out because I have just left school, I am currently searching for a job. I am looking to go into an apprenticeship in engineering.

My name is Max I am 16 and I live in Selby.

I hope this gives you a little more insight of what the Edge Learner Forum is about.
