Me and my arthritis, by Liz Sabin.

In June 2006 at the age of 16, I was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. At the time I was in the middle of my GCSE exams, which I completed and gained 6 Cs and a D. For over a year I had a swollen big toe on my left foot. I saw a lot of medical professionals (eg doctors, physiotherapists), but none of them knew what was wrong. It was only when my right foot became swollen that I found out that I had Arthritis, and then a few weeks later my right knee became swollen and I was told that had Arthritis in it as well. After being diagnosed I felt shocked and scared, but also relieved to finally know what was wrong with me. Now 18, I have also completed a home learning course. I was a Millennium Volunteer and through my involvement engaged with the Edge Learner Forum.

18/03/10- Meeting with the Forum Leader & Champs

By Admin

Nottingham Learner Forum is proud to present our 4 Forum Champions, their roles are to help the forum leaders in coordinating the sessions, and also support the other forum members.

Our Forum Champions are:-

·         Aaron, he attends the Steering Group meetings and reports back to us his findings and information.

·         Leanne and Charlotte - their main activities are the face to face interviews and Rate and Review.

·         Rachel - her main activities are recruiting new members and also role models.

The Champions all work together and make sure the work load is shared equally, because here at Nottingham Edge Learner Forum we believe in teamwork.

Danniebelle, Nottingham Edge Forum leader met up with Aaron and Leanne to discuss how we could work together to make the Forum sessions better. She showed them her agendas and session plans for the next four days, and gave them the opportunity to make comments on them and also help her to make the session more fun!

Danniebelle also gave the chance for the Learner Champions to have their say, on how the sessions should be improved, and how they can work together to get the best out of the sessions, and also let the champions run parts of the sessions!

Comment from Danniebelle “I Found the meeting very useful and helpful to me, because the learner champions are my next point of call, I hope in the future they will run their own sessions, and I feel they are on the right road to this”.

The Big Conversation in Nottingham, March 2010

By Admin

On the 17th March 2010, Natasha, Kirsten, Ryan and I attended the Big Conversation, which was hosted in our own city of Nottingham. The whole event was youth lead, which meant I, as well as other young people from the Bulwell Academy and other places around the country headed our respective tables leading and sticking to the conversation which was about making work experience more meaningful. On my table was a manager of a Wilkinson’s branch, and a manager of Boots as well as other important businessmen and women and younger people designed to get our views on work experience across.

After having my picture took in the evening post with the CEO of Boots, 50 big C.E.Os of Businesses and multinational companies situated in the East Midlands  The C.E.O I got paired with was the boss of major energy suppliers Eon meaning I had the chance to interview him about his path in life. He went through the academic route before working his way up the hierarchy in Eon after his previous job was taken over by a German company.

After interviewing the C.E.O’s , Iain Wright MP (labour) was the centre of a questions and answer session. After i opted to ask the question “do you think the vocational route should be as recognised as the academic” despite misunderstanding my question by “disagreeing” with me he actually agreed that there are other routes to success than the academic route.

The Steering Group – York March 2010

By Admin

Every quarter I attend a meeting called the Steering group in which rep’s from all the other edge forums around the country attend to discuss Edge related issues. Every forum takes it in turns to host this event and I have been to the Nottingham and York meetings. We discuss any problems within our forums and how we can improve them and we also pass on any important messages back to our forums from the Head of the steering group Mike or Rose.

Youth Commission – February 2010

By Admin

I travelled to London to attend an Annual Edge Youth Commission event. I was sat on a table with employers and people who work to improve youth employment and gaining employability skills. We were given the findings of the report of the investigation and we have concluded there are a high rate of youth unemployment in part time jobs despite people wanting to work. We gave ideas why this could be and I suggested it could be due to which background your from as middle class people will have more of a chance of gaining employment as well as saying how people struggle to gain skills and experience when they can’t get on to the ladder!!!
